South Korean container line HMM has introduced two container ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first time in South Korea.
It is part of the introduction of eco-friendly ships to realize net zero (carbon neutrality) by 2045.
HMM unveiled on the 21st the naming ceremony of the 7,700 TEU LNG-powered containerships “HMM Ocean” and “HMM Sky” in Busan.
Ordered by Greek shipowner Navios and built by HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, the vessels will be chartered by HMM for up to 14 years and deployed on its Far East–India–Mediterranean service starting January 2025.
“Being the first LNG-powered containerships in Korea, this milestone reflects our dedication to sustainability,” reads the HMM statement.
It is not the first time that Navios Maritime Partners L.P. led-by Angeliki Frangou partners with HJ Shipbuilding & Construction.
Earlier this year, on June 19, Navios revealed the signing ceremony for two 7,900 TEU methanol-ready newbuilding containerships with HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC).
Both vessels feature the “highest eco standards in line with the company’s decarbonization strategy”, Navios said, and are fitted with scrubbers.
The delivery of the two newbuild boxships is expected in 2026.
