Danish container giant Maersk celebrated the naming of the third large dual-fuel vessel in its fleet of 18 methanol-enabled newbuild containerships.
The name was unveiled last week at a ceremony held in Aarhus, Denmark.
As it is reported, Antonia Mærsk was christened by its godmother Kirsten Andersen, spouse of Vestas CEO Henrik Andersen.
Consistent with the tradition of naming Maersk vessels after members of the founding family, Antonia Mærsk is named after Antonia Uggla, granddaughter of Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, the chair of A.P. Møller Fonden and its investment company A.P. Moller Holding, the majority owner of A.P. Moller – Maersk.
The ship Antonia Mærsk is one of 18 large methanol-enabled newbuilds scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025.
Antonia Mærsk, like her sister vessels, was built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and powered by MAN Energy Solutions dual-fuel engine, enabling her to operate on green methanol.
Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc used the ceremony to reiterate the company’s commitment to accelerating a reduction in carbon emissions.
“Achieving our net-zero targets will likely require multiple green fuel solutions. The journey to decarbonising shipping and logistics is paramount to Maersk. It’s a complex challenge that demands not only innovation but also ambitious climate legislation. Effective pricing mechanisms will be crucial to bridge the gap between fossil and green fuels,” said Vincent Clerc, chief executive officer of A.P. Moller – Maersk.
“Today isn’t about one company taking the lead. It’s about the power of collaboration and the impact we achieve together. Our deep partnership with Henrik Andersen, CEO of Vestas exemplifies that. They have installed more wind power than any other company globally, representing ambitious sustainable agendas across industries,” concluded the chief executive.
Earlier this year, the company celebrated the name giving ceremony of “Astrid Maersk” in Daikoku Pier Cruise Terminal in Yokohama city. The ship is the second of Maersk’s 18 large methanol-enabled vessels, whilst “Ane Mærsk” is the first of Maersk’s new series of vessels.
