The Philippine Coast Guard has been conducting a search and rescue operation for the missing captain of a containership in the vicinity waters of Occidental Mindoro on July 7.
The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel Cape Bonavista, built in 2023, departed from the port of Davao City and was sailing to China when according to the Coast Guard “the crew noticed their captain was missing.”
Based on the CCTV footage on board the containership, the captain was last seen at around 10:46 p.m. local time on July 6.
The master is described by the Philippine’s Coast Guard as a Ukrainian citizen. The coast guard deployed its vessel BRP Malapascua to conduct a search and rescue operation for the captain in the vicinity waters of Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro.
The 44-meter coast guard vessel activated the thermal scanner camera of its Remote-Controlled Weapon System and established a parallel search pattern in the vicinity waters.
The coast guard reported that its vessel tracked the containership Cape Bonavista steaming in the vicinity waters of Cabra Island and communicated with the Philippine Navy to assist in monitoring the vessel.
The next day, on July 8, it continued the search and rescue operation within the nearby waters, but the coast guard reports that it had no results.
After replenishing provisions and refueling the coast guard boat continued the search checking the waters and area around Lubang Island.
