Boxships owner and operator Seaspan Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlas Corp., has returned to shipbuilding with a large order for a series of 27 vessels.
Its parent company, Atlas Corp. in a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, reported the huge shipbuilding ordering for the construction of 27 newbuild containership vessels, ranging between 9,000 and 17,000 teu.
In June this year the company entered into shipbuilding contracts four of which were immediately novated to a customer.
The company didn’t disclose the names of the shipbuilders.
However it said that thirteen of these contracts were thereafter “novated to certain nominees” and upon delivery, these 13 newbuilds will be chartered by the company from such nominees under bareboat charters.
The vessels will be delivered between 2027 through 2028, and each vessel will commence a long term charter upon delivery.
As at June 30, 2024, the company has 41 vessels under construction (December 31, 2023 – 40 vessels).
Its worth mentioning that the first six months of 2024, the shipowner accepted the delivery of 18 newbuild vessels. Each of these vessels commenced long-term time charters upon delivery. The aggregate purchase price for the newbuild vessels delivered during the six months was $1,924,295,000.
Furthermore, the company completed in February the sale of one 4,250 teu vessel for gross proceeds of $29,800,000. This vessel was classified as an asset held for sale on December 31, 2023.
