Officials of the Corfu Port Authority arrested a 56-year-old cruise ship captain at the port of Corfu, according to a July 1 news release from the Hellenic coast guard.
The bulletin said the captain, an Italian citizen, was arrested on the evening of June 30. Officials did not share the captain’s name, or which ship he was working on.
The Coast Guard said in a statement that the incident occurred late Tuesday as strong winds battered the area, causing the ship’s mooring lines to snap while the vessel was docked.
As a result of this incident, the gangway reportedly moved out of position and a 56-year-old woman from New Zealand who was on it fell into the water.
The woman was pulled from the sea with the assistance of the cruise ship crew and port workers and was then transported by ambulance to the Corfu General Hospital.
It was also reported that the female passenger suffered only minor injuries to her body and face.
The cruise ship was permitted to continue its scheduled voyage while the Central Port Authority of Corfu conducts its preliminary investigation.
The ship captain faces charges for violating article 306 under the Hellenic Penal Code.
