An engine room fire led to the evacuation of 37 passengers from a NY Waterway ferry boat on Tuesday evening.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) reported that the NY Waterway ferry boat “Father Mychal Judge” suffered an engine room fire while departing from Manhattan on August 27.
The NY Waterway crew sealed the engine room and deployed the vessels extinguishing systems, containing the fire, the authority said.
The 37 passengers were removed to a nearby ferry and brought to New Jersey. No injuries were reported.
The FDNY marine units, including Marine 1 “Three Forty Three,” conducted an evaluation of the vessel and towed it into Weehawken, New Jersey.

The units continued to operate for several hours, monitoring temperatures with thermal imaging and developed a plan with the North Hudson regional fire department.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
“Great job by the ferry crews and FDNY units. This is a great example of how the FDNY works with other agencies and municipalities to keep New York City’s waterways safe,” said FDNY in a post in the social media X (former twitter).
