Danish several patrols were waiting at the port of Hirtshals to detain the ferry from Oslo as there was a suspicion that a suspected perpetrator may have boarded it after committing an armed robbery “of a rather violent nature” in Oslo. When the North Jutland Police arrested the man in question, it later turned out that he was not the one wanted from the robbery in Oslo.
Danish police assisted the Norwegian police and arrested a person at the Port of Hirtshals who was suspected of having committed an armed robbery at a jeweller’s shop on Thursday afternoon in Oslo.
The North Jutland Police received a report on Thursday evening that an armed robbery had occurred in Oslo, and that there was a suspicion that a suspected perpetrator may have boarded the ferry towards Denmark. The man came by ferry from Norway.
Several patrols were therefore sent towards Hirtshals, where the ferry was detained and the suspect was arrested.
It was a witness in the port area in Oslo who suspected that there was a connection between the wanted robber and a passenger who had boarded the ferry to Denmark. But it later turned out that the police arrested the wrong person.
The ferry has been released for further sailing, whilst further investigation is now continuing in cooperation with the Norwegian police.
Martin Møller, head of the North Jutland Police, describes the police’s efforts: “It has undoubtedly caused some unrest among the other passengers when the ferry was held up, and it also looked violent when the police arrived with numerous patrols to the scene.
“The robbery that had been committed in Norway was of a rather violent nature, and we took our precautions in relation to the suspect – of course with the safety of the other passengers in mind.”
The chief of police elaborates: “We regret the inconvenience the effort has caused to the other passengers. Some had to wait quite a long time on board the ferry while we examined the vehicles and the ship’s facilities. When we receive such a request from our Norwegian colleagues, we react quickly and put together the effort we deem necessary.
“After thorough investigations, investigation and cooperation with the police in Norway, it is now our clear opinion that the person wanted has not been on board the ferry.”
