Norwegian shipping company Færder Tankers and Copenhagen infrastructure partners (CIP), a renewable energy investment specialist which currently manages 12 funds, including the Energy Transition Fund (CI ETF I), team up to launch the next-generation ammonia fuelled medium gas carriers.

Færder Tankers has announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop ammonia-fuelled medium gas carriers (MGCs) with full ammonia carrying capability for Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Energy Transition Fund (CI ETF I).

The design will feature a 50,000 cbm capacity, equipped with dual-fuel ammonia engine, high manoeuvrability with retractable bow thruster and aft thruster, and full ammonia bunkering capabilities, according to Færder Tankers.

Each vessel will be featuring front accommodation for crew members and a 360-degree view from the bridge.

The first vessel is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2028, joining CIP’s future fleet of ammonia carriers.

Once operational, it will support the transportation and bunkering demands of CIP’s clean ammonia projects, providing end-to-end logistics solutions.

In a statement from Færder Tankers, the CEO Capt. Paal Stenberg, said: “By utilizing clean ammonia as both cargo and fuel, we are not only advancing the decarbonization of shipping but also enabling the seamless delivery of CIP’s clean ammonia projects to the global market”.

“The dialogue with leading companies has given us valuable industry insights and the ability to develop safe and robust end to-end bunkering solutions as well as first-hand knowledge about critical developments and maturity of solutions,” added Niels H. Lindegaard, senior business advisor, CIP.
