Heidelberg Materials Norge, in partnership with the Hartmann Group and the Norwegian NOx Fund on Thursday, December 11, announced the development of a new methanol-powered pneumatic cement carrier.

United Bulk Carriers (UBC), a member of the Hartmann Group, said this vessel marks a major milestone in the sustainable distribution of cement.

The vessel, scheduled to start operation in Norway in the first quarter of 2028, will run on a mix of diesel and green methanol and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 80%, equivalent to up to 6,000 tonnes annually compared to existing fossil-fuelled ships.

Hartmann Reederei was selected to design the ship, while United Bulk Carriers USA will operate the ship. Both companies are 100% subsidiaries of Hartmann Group. To remind, United Bulk Carriers (UBC), a member of the Hartmann Group, has its headquarters in the Philadelphia area, USA, and since November 2018, it also has a satellite office in Hamburg, Germany.

The Hartmann Group owned vessel will be chartered to Heidelberg Materials Norge. On the other hand, the former Group company, InterMaritime Shipmanagement, will act as the technical manager for the vessel.

The three companies, Heidelberg Materials, UBC and InterMaritime, have a long-standing cooperation and are also jointly involved in other projects to reduce emissions, the companies said in a release.

An investment of NOK 60 million from the Norwegian NOx Fund has enabled the development of the highly energy-efficient ship that sets a new standard for low-emission bulk transport.
