Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) has started the continuous use of bio-LNG fuel on its LNG-powered car carriers.

The bio-LNG is supplied by Titan Supply B.V. (Titan) at the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium. The first vessel to receive the fuel was Daisy Leader on June 15, and the second was Sumire Leader on July 18.

Titan Supply B.V. is a Dutch company specializing in the supply of LNG fuel for ships. Operating primarily in Europe, Titan also supplies bio-LNG to promote the adoption of low-environmental-impact fuels.

Kaori Takahashi, NYK fuel group general manager, commented: “We are very pleased to begin the continued use of bio-LNG fuel. Bio-LNG fuel is a highly effective option for decarbonizing the shipping industry, and we will continue actively promoting its use. This initiative will be an important step toward reducing our environmental impact further and achieving a sustainable future.”

NYK released its “Decarbonization Story” in November 2023, targeting net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Earlier this year, NYK initiated a biofuel test run on its coal carrier Noshiro Maru, which is operated for Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc.

This is the “first time” in Japan, according to NYK, that a coal carrier has been used to test biofuel for a domestic power utility company.

Mitsubishi Corporation Energy in the Keihin area facilitated the supply of biofuel for the vessel.
