As Posidonia opens its doors against a backdrop of unprecedented disruption in global shipping, the industry’s tenacity will be demonstrated throughout this week. Conflicts, sanctions, piracy and maritime terrorism weigh heavily on the minds of many in shipping today. But despite this bleak backdrop, the resilience of global shipping still shines through.

Hengli Heavy Industries is showcasing its shipbuilding strength during this week’s Posidonia 2026 exhibition in Athens.

On the opening day of the international shipping exhibition Posidonia 2026, Aegean Shipping Management, led by Georgios Melissanidis, announced a landmark agreement with Hengli Heavy Industries for the construction of two LR2/Aframax tankers and two very large crude carriers (VLCCs).

With the latest order, Aegean’s fleet portfolio will expand to 22 vessels, including 16 tankers and six bulk carriers, resulting in a fleet with an average vessel age of approximately three years.

According to the announcement, Aegean enters the VLCC segment for the first time, a strategic move that reflects both its confidence in the market and its long-term vision for the future of the company.

At the same time, the next six months will mark another important phase of expansion for the company, with the delivery of four LR2/Aframax newbuilds, all chartered to Vitol.

With a short statement on its website, the company confirmed on Monday the successful launching of its second LR2 tanker from COSCO Yangzhou Shipyard, marking another significant step in the company’s growth and fleet development strategy.

“We look forward to welcoming this LR2 tanker into our expanding fleet and remain committed to investing in modern tonnage,” the statement of the company reads.
