Authorities launched an investigation after the body of a 70-year-old Greek national was found in Greece’s port of Piraeus. The cause of the death will be determined following an autopsy at the Forensic Medical Service of Piraeus.
Greek authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was discovered on Wednesday, November 12, in the sea area of gate E1 within the central port of Piraeus.
In the early hours of Nov. 12, officers of the Tzelepi Port Authority located a private vehicle parked unlocked in the area of gate E1 of the port of Piraeus. Following an investigation, it was determined that the vehicle belongs to a 70-year-old Greek national, who had been reported missing by his relatives in the evening hours of Nov. 11.
Two patrol boats of the Hellenic Coast Guard immediately set sail to inspect the sea area in front of the gate E1, while a dive was carried out by officers of the Hellenic Coast Guard’s Underwater Missions Unit (MYA).
The body was recovered by officers from the Underwater Missions Unit, while it was then picked up by an EKAB ambulance and transported to the Attikon General Hospital, where he was identified by his relatives.
So far, authorities have not released further details about the man’s identity or how he ended up in the water. The Central Port Authority of Piraeus has launched a preliminary investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The A’ Port department Tzelepi of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, ordered the conduct of an autopsy at the Forensic Medical Service of Piraeus.
