A maritime accident, which fortunately did not take a more serious turn, occurred at the port of Souda in Crete, Greece, on Tuesday morning, when the two vessels – the ro-ro/passenger ship Elyros and the ro-ro cargo ship Iosif K. – collided inside the port, prompting authorities to investigate the circumstances.

It was the moment when the passenger ferry Elyros was departing to operate its scheduled route to Piraeus, carrying 100 passengers, 32 cars, and 74 trucks.

A footage showing the moment of the collision has circulated online, drawing attention to the incident during Greece’s busy summer travel season. The video shows the departing Elyros coming into contact with the incoming Iosif K.

No information has indicated that passengers or crew members were injured. The port authority of Chania was notified following the incident and began procedures to assess the situation.

Both vessels were ordered to remain in the port until they had undergone inspections.

Representatives of the classification society performed an inspection of the Elyros. After the inspection, they issued a certificate confirming the ship remained seaworthy and released it to continue its voyages.

The port authority continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

At the same time, a case file has been opened under the instructions of the relevant public prosecutor’s office, while administrative penalties are also being considered.

No marine pollution was caused as a result of the collision.

Greek minister of maritime affairs and insular policy, Vasilis Kikilias, ordered a formal administrative inquiry into the incident.

“In matters of safety, there is absolutely no tolerance,” Kikilias said, directing the Hellenic Coast Guard to conduct a full investigation into the causes of the collision.
