Another strong blow to international drug trafficking networks was dealt by the control forces of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue, with the seizure of a large quantity of cocaine at the port of Piraeus.

Greek customs authorities seized 46 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a shipping container at the capital’s port of Piraeus, officials said Thursday.

The bust was the result of a joint operation between the Financial Transactions Control Forces (DEOS), in close cooperation with inspectors from the 1st Customs Audit Center (TEK) of Piraeus.

Authorities said the container, which arrived from Ecuador, was flagged following a risk analysis assessment.

During the inspection, officers discovered 40 carefully concealed packages of cocaine with a total weight of 46 kilograms. The illegal shipment is estimated to have generated illicit profits exceeding 1.7 million euros.

Officials confirmed the case fits a broader trafficking pattern involving drug shipments originating in Latin America and routed through Greece.

As the investigation progressed, authorities said have already traced the “specific modus operandi” used by criminal networks involving the import and trafficking of narcotics through Greece from Latin American countries.

The investigation by DEOS is ongoing with the aim of fully uncovering the criminal network and identifying those responsible.
