Greece’s Patras port authority was informed last week of a possible fatal injury to a 47-year-old Greek female seafarer, a crew member (assistant) of a passenger ferry flying the Italian flag, during the unloading of unaccompanied freight vehicles at the new port of Patras.
The port authority officials who went to the scene found the 47-year-old unconscious.
According to the information gathered by the authorities, it was determined that the 47-year-old woman, upon exiting the ship, was dragged by a freight vehicle, which at that time was being unloaded in reverse on the ship’s ramp.
Subsequently, a forensic medical examiner arrived at the scene, where he determined her death, while she was subsequently picked up by an ambulance and transported to the University General Hospital of Patras for an autopsy.
The victim was described by the Greek coast guard as a low-ranking crew member.
The 44-year-old Greek truck driver of the vehicle was transported by an ambulance, accompanied by a coast guard officer, to the General Hospital of Patras “Agios Andreas” for medical treatment.
A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the central port authority of Patras.
