The Greek merchant fleet increased by 0.4% in September 2024 compared with September 2023, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announced on Friday. An increase of 0.1% was recorded in September 2023 compared with September 2022.

Additionally, the gross tonnage of the Greek merchant fleet, for vessels of 100 GRT and over, recorded a decrease of 2.9% in September 2024 compared with September 2023.

A decrease of 2.6% was recorded in September 2023 compared with September 2022.

ELSTAT data show that the total number of Greek merchant ships of 100 GRT and over in September 2024 amounted to 1,834 with 36,336,537 GRT, compared to 1,827 in the same month of 2023 with 37,404,848 GRT and 1,826 ships in 2022 with 38,390,891 GRT.

The number of cargo ships amounted to 357 vessels this September, compared to 362 vessels in September last year, while the number of tankers amounted to 410 ships compared to 422 in September 2023.

On the contrary, the number of Greek passenger ships had an increase of 2.3% (788 vessels in September 2024 compared to 770 in the same period last year) and in other types the number of ships increased by 2.2% (279 vessels compared to 273 ships last year). 

As for the age of the 1,834 Greek merchant ships in 2024, 125 ships are up to 5 years, 184 vessels are from 5 to 10 years and 171 ships are from 10 to 15 years.

Furthermore, 236 ships have an age from 15 to 20 years, 156 ships are from 20 to 25 years and 111 vessels are from 25 to 30 years, while 851 ships are up from 30 years old.

The survey on the Greek merchant fleet is conducted on a monthly basis since 1964, and covers all port authorities of Greece, as well as Greek Consular port authorities abroad, which keep ship registers.
