The Greek merchant fleet increased by 0.8% in March 2025 compared with March 2024. A decrease of 0.4% was recorded in March 2024 compared with March 2023, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announced on May 20.
Additionally, the gross tonnage of the Greek Merchant Fleet, for vessels of 100 GRT and over, recorded a decrease of 3.1% in March 2025 compared with March 2024. A decrease of 3.5% was recorded in March 2024 compared with March 2023.
ELSTAT data show that the total number of Greek merchant ships of 100 GRT and over in March 2025 amounted to 1,833 with 35,336,518 GRT, compared to 1,819 with 36,484,082 GRT in the same month of 2024 and 1,826 with 37,816,842 GRT in March 2023.
The number of cargo ships amounted to 351 vessels this March, compared to 359 vessels in March last year, while the number of tankers amounted to 407 ships compared to 415 in March 2024.
On the contrary, the number of Greek passenger ships had an increase (795 vessels in March 2025 compared to 772 in the same period last year), and in other types the number of ships were 280 vessels compared to 273 ships last year.
As for the age of the 1,833 Greek merchant ships of 100 GRT and over in March 2025, 121 ships are up to 5 years, 159 vessels are from 5 to 10 years, and 168 ships are from 10 to 15 years.
Furthermore, 245 ships have an age from 15 to 20 years, 150 ships are from 20 to 25 years and 124 vessels are from 25 to 30 years, while 866 ships are up from 30 years old.
The survey on the Greek merchant fleet is conducted on a monthly basis since 1964, and covers all port authorities of Greece, as well as Greek Consular port authorities abroad, which keep ship registers.
