The Logothetis family’s Libra Philanthropies foundation has announced $500,000 fellowship to inspire and empower talent from Greece to become trailblazers in maritime innovation.
The independent Libra Philanthropies has initiated this fellowship to honour the legacy of the Greek shipping personality Philippe A. Embiricos.
The foundation said the $500,000 “Philippe A Embiricos (1968) Fellowship in Ocean Engineering” will be set up at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Greek shipping personality Philippe Alexander Embiricos died in 2021, at the age of 78.
Honouring the remarkable legacy of Philippe Alexander Embiricos, a pioneer in reducing the environmental footprint of global shipping, his daughter, Nitzia Logothetis, Founder and Clinical Director of the Seleni Institute, alongside her husband George Logothetis, Executive Chairman at Libra Group and Chairman of the Libra Philanthropies’ Board, have initiated this fellowship through Libra Philanthropies’ Rising Global Leaders program.
This program is dedicated to nurturing emerging leaders through higher education, transformative experiences, and career development opportunities.
Philippe Alexander Embiricos, became a Baltic member in 1979, he was a Director of Embiricos Shipbrokers UK, served as President of BIMCO from 2007-2009, and was for many years on the Executive Committee of Intertanko as well as Lloyds Register Technical Committee.
A qualified naval architect, he was well known on the shipping conference circuit offering great insight to the technical and commercial value of ships. He also wrote a book published in 2006 “The Panama Canal and Its Expansion”.
Expressing her heartfelt sentiments, Nitzia Logothetis stated: “I loved my father dearly, and dearly love that his legacy will endure through this scholarship. He would be so very proud, and that makes me proud.”
Professor Themistoklis Sapsis from MIT highlights the importance of this fellowship: “It will stand as an important marker of Mr. Embiricos’ legacy and be a valuable bridge between people at MIT and in Greece as we work together to develop the next generation of ocean engineering leaders in pursuit of a sustainable maritime future.”
Libra Philanthropies, established in 2023 by the Logothetis family as an independent foundation, is dedicated to perpetuating and scaling the legacy of social responsibility initiatives carried out by the sister organization, the Libra Group, over the past decade.
