Japan’s NYK Plans to introduce 20 vessels by 2028

Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) is planning to introduce 20 vessels by 2028. NYK will introduce a total of 20 new LNG-fueled PCTCs by 2028, as a bridge-solution to achieve net-zero emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG) by 2050 for the NYK Group’s oceangoing businesses.

The company took delivery on October 26 of the LNG-fueled pure car and truck carrier Sweet Pea Leader at Tadotsu Shipyard, a member of the Imabari Shipbuilding Group.

The vessel had been ordered by NYK from Nihon Shipyard, and is NYK’s seventh LNG-fueled pure car and truck carrier.

Like NYK’s other LNG-fueled PCTCs, the vessel was named after flowers “with the desire to realize and pass on a healthy global environment through environment-friendly transportation,” as the company explains.

NYK has established “Sail GREEN” as the company’s brand to emphasize NYK’s efforts to reduce GHG emissions.

Japanese NYK Group is moving forward with the plans of an energy shift to next-generation fuels such as ammonia, as the Group’s aim is to achieve low-carbonization, and decarbonization in the maritime industry.

The LNG-fueled tugboat “Sakigake”, operated in the Tokyo Bay by the NYK Group’s Shin-Nippon Kaiyosh, is scheduled to undergo conversion work and to be re-commissioned in 2024 as an ammonia-fueled tugboat, with even lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
