K Line takes delivery of another Petronas-chartered LNG carrier

Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has taken delivery of the newly-built W-Max class liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, Lagenda Setia, intended for a long-term time charter with energy major Petronas LNG, a fully integrated oil and gas company and a global LNG producer which is a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas).

The ship which is the same type as the other two vessels delivered for Petronas the previous year was delivered by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group).

The carrier, Lagenda Setia, boasts a Length Overall (LOA) of 239.40 meters, and a beam of 36.60 meters.

The vessel is also equipped with a membrane tank type of 79,806 cubic meters capacity, whilst the propulsion system is powered by X-DF dual fuel engine capable which uses gas admitted at low pressure.

Lagenda Setia, identical in type to two other vessels delivered to Petronas in May and June 2022, was given her name by Mrs. Sharifah Fauziah Wan Idrus, wife of Mr. Adnan Zainal Abidin, Petronas COO and EVP & CEO of Gas Business, on August 21, 2023.

“Lagenda” is a Malay word for “legend” and “Setia” is for “loyalty”. “Lagenda” which is also used as the name of the sister vessels represent loyalty and dedication of the LNG-supplying vessel, as well as the long-term relationship with charterers.

Together with two sister vessels, she will engage in transportation of LNG from Malaysia (Bintulu) to China (Shanghai) for Shenergy (Group) Co. The other two ships are the “Lagenda Suria” and the sister-vessel “Lagenda Serenity”. K Line chartered both of the 239 meters long ships to Petronas for a period of 12 years plus 12 years (extension option) from 2022.

The Japanese major K Line defines LNG carriers business as one of the top priority area for driving growth in its Medium-Term Management Plan, which was published on May 2022.
