MOL’s LNG carrier newbuild named in South Korea

Japan’s shipping major Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) held a naming ceremony on Friday for a newbuilding LNG carrier at the Geoje Shipyard of Hanwha Ocean in South Korea.

The vessel, which will serve Mitsui & Co., Ltd., was named Marvel Swallow.

“After delivery on October 28, the vessel will undergo gassing-up / cool-down operation in Japan and then proceed to its first loading port in the U.S.,” MOL said in its statement.

Furthermore, the Marvel Swallow will sail under a time charter contract with Mitsui & Co.

MOL and Mitsui & Co. signed a charter contract for the Marvel Swallow, the fourth in a series of vessels, in 2022.

Contracts were signed for the three previous newbuilding vessels in 2014 and 2015.

The new vessel is 294.9 meters long with a 46.4 meters breadth.

It is equipped with the latest MAN Energy Solutions engines, which offer “improved fuel efficiency and are more environmentally friendly than those installed on current LNG carriers,” MOL said.

Recently, MOL and Singapore’s state-owned LNG terminal operator Singapore LNG Corporation Pte. Ltd. inked a long-term time charter contract for one floating storage and regasification (FSRU) newbuild.

The FSRU will be built at Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd. in South Korea. After delivery, MOL will own, manage, and operate the FSRU.

The 299m vessel will have an LNG storage capacity of 200,000m3 and will be moored at the Jurong Port in Singapore.
