QatarEnergy signed a 27-year deal with energy player and Japan’s power generation firm JERA Co. for the supply of up to 3 million tons per annum of LNG from Qatar to Japan.
Under the terms of the sale and purchase agreement (SPA), signed on the sidelines of the 21st International Conference and Exhibition on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG 2026) in Doha, deliveries will commence in 2028.
In accordance with the SPA deal, LNG will be supplied on a delivered ex-ship (DES) basis from Qatar’s LNG production facilities.
The agreement, signed between the minister of state for energy affairs and the president and CEO of QatarEnergy Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi and the global CEO and chair of JERA Yukio Kani, marks a new chapter in a partnership started over 30 years ago.
JERA said gas-fired power generation will continue to play a critical role in maintaining Japan’s energy stability as Japan expects an increase in electricity demand driven by the expansion of data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, and other energy-intensive infrastructure.
Qatar has also provided critical emergency LNG supplies to Japan following the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011.
Commenting on this occasion, minister Al-Kaabi said: “We are delighted to further strengthen our long-standing relationship with JERA, a strategic partner and one of the leading LNG players globally, and to reaffirm our continued commitment to supporting Japan’s long term energy needs.”
Al-Kaabi added: “Our collaboration, which dates back to the early 1990s, is a testament to the enduring ties between our two companies and to our common desire to ensure that safe and reliable LNG supplies continue to support Japan’s economic development.”
From his side, Yukio Kani, global CEO and chair of JERA, noted: “This agreement solidifies a vital pillar of JERA’s strategy to strengthen our global portfolio and support the surging energy demand of tomorrow. It ensures we remain fully aligned with Japan’s national policy and the energy transition goals, securing a stable and resilient energy future for the nation.”
