Since 19 November 2023, the IMO Secretariat has recorded 69 incidents confirmed by Flag States, including acts of piracy against international shipping vessels transiting the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, according to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) latest report.
The 69 incidents took place between the period November 2023 to October 2024.
The distribution of these 69 incidents over time is 2 in November last year, 14 in December, 7 in January this year, 10 in February, 6 in March, 6 in April, 2 in May, 10 in June, 5 in July, 3 in August, 1 in September and 3 in October.
These attacks concerned the 30% of containerships, 29% of bulk carriers, 29% of tankers, 10% of general cargo and 2% of ro-ro.
It should be noted that 3 attacks during the month of August 2024 were confirmed but not claimed by the Houthis, so they are not included in the IMO’s figures.
In its latest report on incidents in the Red Sea, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) provides an update on the situation in the Red Sea region as of 25 November 2024.
The Secretary-General submits a monthly report to the UN Security Council. The report provided to the UN Security Council includes only a table of the various attacks for cases identified since 10 January 2024.
The cases reported to the UN Security Council meet three criteria: An attack is reported on a vessel specifically identified by a navy, media or coastal state, the attack on this particular vessel is publicly claimed by the Houthis, and the attack is confirmed by the flag state or the company.
If one of these three criteria is not met, the case is not listed, IMO says.
