Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) has sealed a long-term time charter deal for an offshore wind crew transfer vessel with Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy LLC.
To remind, Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy is a joint venture established by JERA Nex bp Japan LLC, Electric Power Development Co., Tohoku Electric Power Co. and Itochu Corporation.
The 28-meter-long vessel will be constructed by Kosaba Shipbuilding in Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture, and will operate along the coasts of Oga, Katagami, and Akita, engaging in Japan’s first offshore wind project in general sea areas.
An NYK statement reads: “The vessel’s design is based on a model operated by Northern Offshore Services AS, Europe’s largest CTV operator, with modifications to facilitate domestic construction.
“Building the vessel in Japan will boost the shipbuilding industry, create jobs, and support regional development.”
The 145 gt CTV will be managed by Japan Offshore Support Co., an Akita-based joint venture between NYK and Akita Eisen, which also trains and hires local crew for the growing offshore wind sector.
“By providing CTVs for offshore wind projects off Oga, Katagami, and Akita, NYK aims to contribute to Japan’s stable electricity supply while strengthening our commitment to offshore wind power as a key business area,” the company said.
