The Norwegian floating offshore wind specialist Odfjell Oceanwind (OOW) has acquired Ørsted’s 80% share in the Salamander offshore wind farm.
The 100 MW floating offshore wind project in Scotland, Salamander, located 35 kilometres off Peterhead, will be owned by Odfjell Oceanwind, Simply Blue Group and Subsea7.
The OOW will now continue the development of the project with the remaining shareholders, Simply Blue Group and Subsea7, into a demonstration project for a commercial-scale floating offshore wind.
The new consortium has been welcomed by Crown Estate Scotland.
As it is reported, the project was awarded an exclusivity agreement for a seabed lease by Crown Estate Scotland in the Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round and recently received section 36 consent from the Scottish government.
The 100MW project seeks to be a contributor in the delivery of the Scottish government’s target 11 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and the UK government’s target of 5GW of operational floating offshore wind by the same date, according to OOW.
“Innovation projects are essential to de-risk relevant floating offshore wind technologies and the supply chain prior to embarking on larger projects like those in ScotWind and many of the INTOG projects that are planned to be operational in the 2030s,” said Per Lund, Odfjell Oceanwind chief executive.
Lund added: “The UK has become a global leader in offshore wind, and we are very excited that Odfjell Oceanwind is establishing a presence in Scotland, where our sister companies Odfjell Technology and Odfjell Drilling have been present since the 1980s.”
