Cable installation vessel Nexus

The Dutch based and family-owned international marine contractor Van Oord has signed a contract with Danish based Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) to install inter-array cables for the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

As per contract Van Oord will be responsible for the transport, installation and burial of the 33 inter array cables with a total length of approximately 64 kilometers, with the inter array cable installation work to start in 2027.

Van Oord mentions that it will deploy its dedicated cable-laying vessel “Nexus” to carry out the work on the project and use a remote-controlled trencher to bury the cables to the required depth below the seabed.

The Fengmiao 1 wind farm is located approximately 35 kilometers off the coast of Taichung in central Taiwan, and when it is fully operational the 500 megawatt (MW) wind farm will serve as a large scale and stable source of green electricity supplying Taiwanese businesses.

Bart van Schooten, area manager at Van Oord, said: “We are excited to extend on our strong track-record in Taiwan with our involvement in the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm.

“We are eager to build on our established presence in the region, leveraging our cable-laying expertise and operational excellence. We are committed to supporting Taiwan’s energy transition and contributing to the country’s offshore wind ambitions, with more projects to follow.”
