Denmark’s largest commercial port, the Port of Aarhus, announced the largest cargo turnover in the past fourteen years, with an overall increase for both containers and bulk cargo of a whopping 9 percent compared to 2021.

In 2022, the port states, that a total of 11,047,351 million tonnes and 759,000 TEU containers were shipped over the quay which is the largest container turnover ever in the port, and over the past 10 years there has been an increase in total freight turnover at the port of over 30 percent.

Port Director, Thomas Haber Borch, says that “2022 has been a special year in many ways. As major unforeseen things are happening in the world, we are experiencing that more companies are sending large quantities of goods through the Port of Aarhus. I am of course extremely happy about that. This means progress, development and jobs in Aarhus, East Jutland and the whole of Denmark. The progress in the Port of Aarhus is due, among other things, to the fact that ship transport to Aarhus is gaining increasing market shares compared to, for example, transport by truck from Hamburg. This is a win for the climate, as ship transport is the most sustainable form of transport. We must of course be able to support this at the port now and in the future. The progress is pushing capacity at the port to an unprecedented level, and the large increase in cargo volumes is also pushing capacity at the port to a level that has not been seen before”, as the port director says.
