In an unusual incident, a forklift fell into the sea at the cruise ship docking area of Corfu’s new port. In the early hours of Saturday, August 16, the Corfu port authority was informed of the fall of a forklift (Clark type) into the sea, at the cruise ship docking area in the new port of Corfu.

Officials from the Greek port authority were dispatched to the scene and located the 59-year-old operator of the vehicle.

He told the officials that while he was on the pier with the vehicle temporarily parked, it suddenly started moving on its own and ended up in the sea.

During its fall, it came into contact with the right stern section of the cruise ship, causing two superficial damages that did not affect the vessel’s safe operation.

Thankfully, the damage was only superficial and there was no impact to the operation of the ship or for the busy port.

The forklift was retrieved by a private crane vehicle and with the assistance of a private diver in the port of Corfu, after the cruise ship had departed.

A preliminary investigation is underway by the Central Port Authority of Corfu, while no marine pollution was caused by the incident.
