Kenya Railways has announced disruptions in the evacuation of cargo from Mombasa and Nairobi and delivery of cargo into the port of Mombasa, due to the heavy rains experienced in Mombasa over the last few days, which have resulted into flooding, wash-aways and landslides in various sections of the rail network.
This has affected normal train operations, including cargo transfers, loading and offloading activities in the port of Mombasa.
“A section of the SGR corridor between Mombasa Terminus and Mariakani, has experienced a landslide which has resulted into the closure of the section for all freight trains,” Kenya Railways noted in a statement over the weekend.
In a new update yesterday Kenya Railways said the movement of cargo trains to and from Mombasa has resumed, after the intervention of corporation to restore normalcy in the section that was damaged by the heavy rains between Mariakani and Mombasa Terminus.
Loading and offloading of cargo at the port of Mombasa has also commenced, and now the corporation is working round the clock to minimise any delays, as it is said.
