A 46-year-old master (national of Ukraine) was arrested in Greece on Friday four days after the Bahamas-flagged cargo ship, he commanded, hit rocks in the island of Makronisos, in Greece.
The Hellenic coast guard issued a statement on Friday mentioning that the master was arrested for violation of the Greek law, articles 291 and 277, in conjunction with the article 233 which refers to drunkenness while on duty.
To remind, the cargo ship struck rocks on the southeast side of Makronisos, an island in the Aegean Sea, in Greece on the morning of November 11, according to the coast guard.
The vessel, which had sailed loaded from Turkey to the Greek capital’s port of Piraeus, with nine foreign crew members (nationals of Ukraine), safely sailed to the anchorage of the port of Piraeus, accompanied by the tugboat “Alexander 5”.
The ship, according to reports from the coast guard, sustained a crack above the waterline on its starboard side. The vessel reported no injuries or water ingress.
The Central Port Authority of Piraeus has prohibited the vessel from departing until -the authority- receives the seaworthiness certificate from the class society, while the tugboat is located near it, for any assistance, the coast guard said on November 11.
