A fire broke out in the engine room of a ship in the East Johor Strait, within Singapore waters, said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
The authority said they were alerted on October 21 at 10:30am to the fire in the engine room onboard the Malta-flagged tanker, MED ATLANTIC, in the East Johor Strait, within Singapore waters.
As reported, all 22 crew have disembarked the vessel and are safe with no injuries.
An MPA patrol craft, two Police Coast Guard craft, three Singapore Civil Defence Force marine firefighting and rescue vessels, and two tug-boats have been deployed to render assistance and ensure navigational safety.
According to MPA, the vessel is currently anchored and there is no disruption to vessel traffic in the area.
Meanwhile the authority is issuing navigational broadcasts for passing vessels to keep clear of the incident area.
The Singapore Food Agency is also monitoring the situation closely and has advised the fish farms in the vicinity to take the necessary precautionary measures.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed the incident, without disclosing the name of the ship, mentioning that on the morning of October 21 at about 10:30am, SCDF was alerted to a fire onboard a vessel anchored in the East Johor Straits.
SCDF said a total of three SCDF marine firefighting and rescue vessels and about 30 marine firefighting specialists from Brani Marine Fire Station and West Coast Marine Fire Station were deployed to the incident.
Upon arrival, SCDF used a water monitor to cool the exterior of the vessel. Cooling of the vessel’s exterior is known as boundary cooling, and this helps to reduce the temperature of the vessel’s metal structure.
