A fuel oil tanker chartered by QatarEnergy was hit by a missile in Qatar’s northern territorial waters early on Wednesday, the company said. The vessel, Aqua 1, was struck in the early morning hours of April 1.

QatarEnergy says none of the crew members on board were injured, and there is no impact on the environment as a result of this incident.

The State of Qatar announced that it was targeted on Wednesday by three cruise missiles launched from Iran.

In a statement carried by Qatar News Agency (QNA), the Qatari ministry of defence said that its armed forces successfully intercepted two of the cruise missiles, while the third missile struck an oil tanker on charter to QatarEnergy in the country’s territorial waters.

The ministry added that procedures were implemented, and coordination was established with relevant authorities to evacuate the tanker, which had 21 crew members on board, without any human casualties.

Earlier, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that it had received a report of an incident 17 nautical miles north of Ras Laffan, Qatar. The company security officer reported the tanker has been hit by unknown projectile on the port side causing damage to the hull above water line. UKMTO said that the crew was reported as safe and there was no environmental impact.

UKMTO further said that could confirm the vessel was struck by two projectiles. One caused a fire which was later extinguished. The other remained unexploded within the vessels engine room. UKMTO said it was unable to confirm the source of the projectiles and said that it was continuing to investigate.

UKMTO in its report didn’t disclose the name of the tanker.
