Singapore-based underwater robots specialist Neptune Robotics has raised US$52m series B funds, led by multi-asset investment platform Granite Asia, with strategic backing from Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) to fuel R&D, new robotic systems, AI-driven service platforms, and expansion into 20 markets worldwide, with Japan as a potential key hub.

Neptune claims its underwater robots can clean ship hulls three to five times faster. It also says that its robotic system can clean full draft capesize vessels within 24 hours, counter 4-knot currents, operating day and night in both clear and murky waters.

With more than 50,000 large commercial vessels in operation, robotic hull cleaning is considered a multi-billion-dollar global market.

NYK, which has worked with Neptune since 2022, is now rolling out the technology across its global fleet of bulk carriers, car carriers and other carriers, Neptune Robotics said in its release, adding that this move is projected to generate even greater fuel and emissions reductions.

With coverage across 61 ports in Asia, Neptune already serves the bulk carrier and container fleets.

“Granite Asia and NYKs’ support validates how far robotics has come in transforming maritime efficiency and sustainability. This round gives us the resources to scale globally, continue innovating, and help shipowners boost returns while cutting emissions,” said Elizabeth Chan, CEO of Neptune Robotics.

Neptune Robotics is a technology company specializing in robotics-driven vessel cleaning and energy efficiency optimization.
