US Transportation Secretary nominee Duffy pledges support for Jones Act

At a US Senate Commerce Committee hearing on Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to be U.S. secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, earned praise from Senators on both sides of the dais, citing his qualifications and history of public service, according to Republican’s release on the Senate Commerce Committee website.

The American Maritime Partnership (AMP), a maritime industry legislative coalition representing all elements of the U.S. domestic maritime industry including shipping companies, mariners, shipyards, pro-defense organizations, and others, also endorsed Duffy’s nomination.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), AMP expressed its support to the former congressman Sean Duffy’s nomination as secretary of transportation on January 15.

“AMP supports the nomination of former Congressman Sean Duffy as Secretary of Transportation and urges his swift confirmation. We have worked with Cong. Duffy during his tenure in Congress and believe he is well-qualified for this important position,” wrote Jennifer Carpenter, president American Maritime Partnership.

“AMP particularly appreciates Cong. Duffy’s unequivocal support for the Jones Act as expressed during his Commerce Committee confirmation hearing today. During his first term, the Trump Administration described the Jones Act as “one of five critical dimensions of President Trump’s Made in the USA strategy” and we are pleased that Mr. Duffy publicly conveyed his support for the law today,” Carpenter added.

To remind, US president-elect Donald Trump announced on November 18 the nomination of the former Congressman Sean Duffy as the U.S. secretary of transportation.

As the father of nine incredible children, Sean Duffy knows “how important it is for families to be able to travel safely, and with peace of mind,” Trump commented in his post on Truth Social.

Trump in a statement praised Duffy as a “tremendous and well-liked public servant” and said he was “a respected voice and communicator in the Republican Conference” during his time in Congress.

“He will prioritize Excellence, Competence, Competitiveness and Beauty when rebuilding America’s highways, tunnels, bridges and airports. He will ensure our ports and dams serve our Economy without compromising our National Security, and he will make our skies safe again by eliminating DEI for pilots and air traffic controllers,” Trump said.

In his opening statement at Senate Commerce Committee confirmation hearing on Wednesday for the Secretary of Transportation, chairman Ted Cruz (R-Texas) outlined his agenda for the next two years and affirmed his support for congressman Sean Duffy.

Additionally, Sen. Cruz highlighted congressman Duffy’s past leadership in Congress to improve the transportation sector and emphasized the need to eliminate burdensome regulations at the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), invest in infrastructure enhancements, and promote safer travel.
