The maritime industry is navigating turbulent waters as shipping companies are facing increased risks, rerouting challenges, and rising insurance premiums. At least two tankers were tracked diverting from Hormuz transits on Sunday, while other shipowners sought to minimize time spent in the Gulf.
The Israel-Iran ceasefire agreement appears to be extremely fragile just hours after coming into effect, with the warring arch enemies accusing one another of launching strikes almost immediately after they agreed to stop their tit-for-tat attacks.
US President Donald Trump said early Tuesday that a ceasefire between Israel and Iran was now “in effect.” Iranian and Israeli media earlier said a ceasefire had begun, but confusion swirled over the precise details.
Within hours, the Israeli defense forces accused Iran of violating the ceasefire between the two countries by ordering the military to “respond forcefully” to Iran’s violation of the ceasefire agreement with “high-intensity strikes”.
The Maritime AI™ company Windward data reveals that June 22 marked the lowest number of unique vessels entering the Strait of Hormuz since the beginning of the crisis, with a daily number of inbound voyages 28% lower than the weekly average.
Outbound movements mirrored the trend, registering a 16% drop in daily departures compared to the past week’s average. These declines underscore heightened caution among shipowners amid geopolitical uncertainty and signal the growing impact of perceived risks on real-time maritime behavior.
The chief of the general staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said yesterday the military will “respond with force” to what it calls Iran’s “severe violation.”
“In light of the severe violation of the ceasefire carried out by the Iranian regime, we will respond with force,” Eyal Zamir is quoted as saying in a post on X by the IDF.
Few hours later, the Israel defense forces (IDF) said they conducted a “situational assessment following the beginning of the ceasefire with Iran.”
Donald Trump took to Truth Social to declare an “end” of what he called the “12 DAY WAR” between Israel and Iran. Just hours later the ceasefire was on the brink of collapse.
Trump’s announcement of a halt in fighting was met with relief and cautious optimism.
In his initial announcement about the Iran-Israel ceasefire, the US president said the truce would begin around six hours from his first social media message announcing the breakthrough.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that Israel and Iran agreed to a “Complete and Total CEASEFIRE” in the next 24 hours, after days of exchanging air and missile strikes. The president offered no further details about what either side agreed to, but insisted both sides would “remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL.”
But it remained unclear Monday night in the US – early Tuesday morning in the Middle East – whether the fragile equilibrium would hold.
In an earlier sign, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi thanked his country’s armed forces and said military operations against Israel “continued until the very last minute,” hinting that hostilities may have ended.
“The military operations of our powerful Armed Forces to punish Israel for its aggression continued until the very last minute, at 4 a.m.,” Araghchi said in a post on X.
Earlier, Araghchi had said Iran would halt its military response if Israel stopped its strikes on Iran by that time.
Trump claimed that Israel and Iran reached out to him about peace between the two regions.
Just a few hours after he announced the ceasefire deal, Trump said in a post on Truth Social, “Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, “PEACE!” I knew the time was NOW. The World, and the Middle East, are the real WINNERS! Both Nations will see tremendous LOVE, PEACE, AND PROSPERITY in their futures.”
The White House maintains that the ceasefire deal was only possible due to the US strikes on three of Iran’s nuclear facilities. “We couldn’t have made today’s “deal” without the talent and courage of our great B-2 pilots, and all of those associated with that operation. In a certain and very ironic way, that perfect “hit,” late in the evening, brought everyone together, and the deal was made.”
A short while later the president asked the two sides not to violate the ceasefire agreement.
Although the strait of Hormuz remains operational for commercial traffic, the risks have escalated.
Windward’s key findings from the weekend include a 60% surge in GPS jamming incidents, affecting 1,600 vessels – up from a daily average of around 1,000 between June 13–20.
AIS signals were manipulated and redirected to locations along Iran’s coast, including Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Asalouyeh, and offshore positions near Ras Al Khaimah, Shaam, and Bandar Siraf.
Among the affected vessels, 271 ships over 5,000 deadweight tons (dwt) experienced interference. The most impacted vessel classes by tonnage were crude oil tankers, followed by bulk carriers, product tankers, and LNG carriers.
Donald Trump’s Full Posts on Truth Social:
Both Israel and Iran wanted to stop the War, equally! It was my great honor to Destroy All Nuclear facilities & capability, and then, STOP THE WAR!
ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly “Plane Wave” to Iran. Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect!
ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!
THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!
CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED! Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL. On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.” This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will! God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!
