Denmark has signed a contract to buy coastal defence systems to combat possible naval threats from the land.
The government has inked a deal with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for the supply of the Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defence System.
According to a press release from the company dated December 17, the Danish government signed the agreement for the Coastal Defence System, known as NSM CDS.
The contract is valued at more than €100m and will provide Denmark with a modern coastal artillery system.
As noted by the company’s president Eirik Lie, the acquisition will enable Denmark to combat modern naval threats from the land and will strengthen the country’s operational capabilities.
“In addition, it will help increase the NSM CDS’ overall presence from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea,” he also said.
The coastal defence system consists of Kongsberg’s fire control system, the NSM missile and launch pads. Denmark signed a contract for NSM missiles for its frigates earlier this year.
The acquisition makes Denmark the fifth nation to acquire the coastal artillery system in NATO, according to Kongsberg, in addition to Poland, the USA/US Marine Corps, Romania and Latvia.
Officials from the Danish ministry of defence acquisition and logistics organisation (DALO) said the new acquisition is an important element in ensuring the national security and sovereignty.
