Malta will soon take another step forward to improve the registration process through the introduction of a digital system.

Starting June 1, Transport Malta will start offering electronic certificates (e-certificates) to shipowners.

It is to be noted that all original hardcopy certificates issued by the administration prior to this date are to remain valid until their date of expiry and shall be carried onboard.

This transition represents a significant step forward in reducing administrative burdens on shipowners, port State control officials, and crews, while ensuring a more secure, efficient, and environmentally sustainable certification framework, according to Malta Transport authority.

From the effective date, the Malta Ship Registry will issue certificates in electronic PDF format, which will be transmitted to the electronic address indicated by the applicant for onward delivery to masters and ship managers.

All electronic certificates issued to Maltese-registered ships will include specific security features, as the Malta Transport authority claims in its notice issued on May 12.

“This transition is part of the Malta Ship Registry’s commitment to improving administrative efficiency, enhancing sustainability, and supporting the maritime industry’s shift towards digital solutions,” the authority noted in its release.
