QatarEnergy confirms ‘extensive damage’ after missile attack on Ras Laffan

QatarEnegy reported a missile attack on Wednesday evening on the Ras Laffan Industrial City as the war in the Middle East escalated with attacks on energy facilities.

“Emergency response teams were deployed immediately to contain the resulting fires, as extensive damage has been caused,” the company said in a statement. “QatarEnergy will continue to communicate the latest available information.”

All personnel have been accounted for and no casualties have been reported at this time.

Earlier, the Qatari Ministry of Interior said that civil defence had extinguished the fire in the Ras Laffan area following the Iranian strike. The ministry also noted that the fire had been preliminarily brought under control, with no injuries reported.

The Qatari ministry of foreign affairs condemned the attack, which caused fires resulting in significant damage to the facility.

It described the attack as a dangerous escalation, a flagrant violation of state sovereignty, and a direct threat to its national security and regional stability.

Ras Laffan Industrial City, approximately one hour commute by road north of Doha, is the onshore base for the processing of gas and other hydrocarbons produced offshore in the North Field.

Ras Laffan Port is a large liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility. In addition to LNG, Ras Laffan Port has facilities for the export of various other liquid petroleum products and sulphur. The port also has facilities for the import of dry cargo and a large Offshore Supply Vessels base.

In a statement, the ministry of foreign affairs stressed that Qatar has repeatedly called for the protection of civilian and energy facilities across the region, including in Iran, to preserve regional stability and international peace.

Despite these calls, it said, Iran continued its escalation policies, pushing the region toward the brink and drawing countries not party to this crisis into the conflict zone.

Qatar stated that the attack breaches the UN Security Council Resolution 2817 and urged the council to take measures.

The ministry also affirmed that Qatar reserves the right to respond and will take all necessary actions to protect its sovereignty, security and the safety of its citizens and residents.
