A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile whilst transiting inbound in the Strait of Hormuz, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said Sunday.
UKMTO said it received a time-late report of the incident on Saturday, which occurred 12 nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman.
“A tanker has been struck by an unknown projectile whilst transiting inbound in the Strait of Hormuz,” UKMTO said in a warning notice.
UKMTO cited military authorities as its source but did not identify the projectile or say who may have launched it.
The vessel identity, flag, ownership or exact damage extent have not been publicly detailed in the initial UKMTO warning.
No casualties or environmental damage were reported. Authorities are investigating the incident, and UKMTO has advised vessels transiting the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.
This is the latest in a series of reported projectile-related incidents affecting commercial shipping near the Omani side in recent weeks and months.
UKMTO continues to release regular warnings and advisory notes (including Joint Maritime Information Center / JMIC updates). Shipping is repeatedly advised to exercise heightened caution, maintain vigilance, and report incidents or suspicious activity promptly.
In the latest JMIC advisory note released on Aug. 30, it is highlighted that the threat level to the Strait of Hormuz remains SEVERE due to recent Iranian attacks.
Attack frequency against commercial shipping in the Strait has remained consistent over the reporting period, including unknown-projectile strikes on both inbound and outbound transiting vessels, and the environment reflects an established post-MOU status quo.
Vessels transiting with AIS-on can expect to receive directed hails instructing them to divert toward the northern Iranian-controlled route.
Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is expected to remain at reduced levels, compared to the 2025 baseline, across both the northern Iranian-controlled route and the southern Omani corridor.
Operator caution should continue, driven by a series of vessel attacks, ongoing U.S. blockade enforcement, and elevated regional tension.
Incident with a tanker and military forces in Indian Ocean
UKMTO also received a report on Aug. 31 of an incident involving a tanker and military forces in the Indian Ocean.
Vessels are advised to consider the latest maritime security information and maintain awareness of the evolving operational environment. Authorities are aware, UKMTO said, adding that relevant investigations remain ongoing.
