US President Donald Trump has announced a new wave of tariffs, including a 100% levy on branded or patented pharmaceutical products from 1 October unless a company is building a manufacturing plant in US.
The president sees tariffs as a way to pressure pharmaceutical manufacturers to ramp up production in the US.
Washington will also impose a 25% tariff on all heavy trucks made in other parts of the world and 50% levies on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and associated products, the president said as he unveiled the industry-focused measures.
Additionally, USA will be charging a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture.
Trump said that foreign manufacturers have oversupplied the US market, and the tariffs were necessary to protect US manufacturers.
“The reason for this is the large scale “FLOODING” of these products into the United States by other outside Countries. It is a very unfair practice, but we must protect, for National Security and other reasons, our Manufacturing process,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Friday.
Trump also announced a 25% tariff on heavy trucks, a trade levy designed to level the playing field for America’s truck-making industry.
The president indicated in a Truth Social post what would be needed to protect the heavy truck manufacturers from “unfair outside competition.”
“In order to protect our Great Heavy Truck Manufacturers from unfair outside competition, I will be imposing, as of October 1st, 2025, a 25% Tariff on all “Heavy (Big!) Trucks” made in other parts of the World,” Trump wrote, adding “Therefore, our Great Large Truck Company Manufacturers, such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Mack Trucks, and others, will be protected from the onslaught of outside interruptions. We need our Truckers to be financially healthy and strong, for many reasons, but above all else, for National Security purposes.”
Trump said on Truth Social that the pharmaceutical product tariffs would not apply to companies that are building manufacturing plants in the United States, which he defined as either “breaking ground” or being “under construction.”
He noted that there will be no tariff on these pharmaceutical products if construction has started.
