Iran has agreed to allow an additional 20 Pakistani-flagged vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, with two ships permitted to transit daily.
Pakistani deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, said in a post on X that Iran had agreed to allow 20 more ships under the Pakistani flag to pass through the Strait of Hormuz; two ships will cross the Strait daily.
He said that this was a “a welcome and constructive gesture by Iran and deserves appreciation.”
“It is a harbinger of peace and will help usher stability in the region,” Ishaq Dar wrote in a post. “This positive announcement marks a meaningful step toward peace and will strengthen our collective efforts in that direction. Dialogue, diplomacy, and such confidence-building measures are the only way forward.”
US president Donald Trump suggested on Thursday that Iran let ten oil tankers transit the Strait of Hormuz as a goodwill gesture in negotiations. Trump made the comments at a Cabinet meeting in the White House, elaborating on what he had previously described as a “present” from Iran.
“There are eight boats going right up the Middle of the Hormuz, eight big tankers loaded with oil. I think they were Pakistani flagged. They said we will send two more boats. It ended up being 10 boats,” he noted.
The government of Pakistan has emerged as a key facilitator between the US and Tehran as the war in Iran drags on, serving as an intermediary for messages between the two sides.
Dar also spoke by phone with Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi.
“The two leaders discussed the evolving regional situation and ongoing developments,” the Pakistani foreign ministry said adding that Dar “emphasized the need for de-escalation, stressing that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path for lasting peace. He also underscored the importance of an end to all attacks and hostilities.”
Trump reposted on Sunday Pakistan’s foreign minister Ishaq Dar tweet about Iran allowing 20 more Pakistani ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
