Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) reported that it damaged a Russian submarine in Novorossiysk causing critical damage to the vessel.
In a statement, the SBU said the operation used “Sub Sea Baby” underwater drones to blew up a Russian submarine.
“As a result of the explosion, the submarine suffered critical damage and was effectively put out of action,” the SBU said in its statement. Shipping Telegraph could not independently verify the claim or the video posted by the service.
The report states that the cost of such submarine is about $400m. “Considering the current international sanctions, building a similar submarine could now cost up to $500m. This class of submarines is also known as a “Black Hole” due to its hull’s ability to absorb sounds and remain undetectable by sonar,” the SBU noted.
They called it a unique “special operation,” staged jointly between the Ukrainian navy and the SBU’s 13th main directorate of military counterintelligence.
“Four Kalibr cruise missile launchers, which Russia uses to strike Ukrainian territory, were on board the submarine,” the SBU stated.
Russia acknowledged the Ukrainian attack but said it failed and that no ships or submarines were damaged.
“The enemy’s attempt to carry out sabotage using an unmanned underwater vehicle did not achieve its goals,” Moscow said, adding that no ships, crews or submarines, sustained any damage and they are continuing their duties as usual.
