A Ukrainian seafarer was found alive by the Greek coastguard on Monday after falling overboard from a cargo ship.
The 31-year-old seafarer, Ukrainian citizen, fall into the sea from a cargo ship in Greek waters between Amorgos – Naxos – Antiparos and Ios.
The Greek coastguard didn’t disclose the name of the ship in its report, other than to describe it as a Liberian-flagged cargo ship.
Specifically, in the early morning hours of November 3, the port authorities of Amorgos, Naxos, Paros, Antiparos and Ios were informed by the joint search and rescue coordination center of the Hellenic Coast Guard about the fall into the sea of a crew member of a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in the sea area between Amorgos – Naxos – Antiparos and Ios.
Under the coordination of the center, an immediate search and rescue operation started. The man was located by three Greek coastguard patrol boats and by three nearby ships that were in the vicinity.
The man was found in good health, in the sea area south of Iraklia, and was recovered by the Greek coastguard.
He was then transported to the port of Naxos, where he was transferred by ambulance to the General Hospital of Naxos, where he remains hospitalized.
As it is reported, a preliminary investigation is being conducted by the port authority of Naxos.
