Finland’s Aspo Plc subsidiary ESL Shipping has acquired a geared ice-class 1A second-hand vessel. This strategic acquisition follows the sale of Kallio and bridges the gap in capacity until the first green handy vessels join the fleet in about two years.

“We have strengthened our capacity with an ice-classed and geared second-hand vessel,” the owner said.

The vessel, which has a deadweight of 16,600 tons, was handed over on January 12 in Tallinn, Estonia. The vessel was renamed Nordis and sails under the Finnish flag.

“By adding this vessel to our fleet, we can safeguard employment for our experienced crew and maintain consistent service for both new and existing customers during the transition period,” says Mikki Koskinen, managing director of ESL Shipping.

The main particulars of the general cargo vessel Nordis are: 2002-built, Finnish-flagged, dwt 16,600 mt, length 142.5 m, breadth 22.0 m, draft: 9.4 m and ice class: 1A.

The combined fleet of ESL Shipping and AtoB@C Shipping consists of around 40 vessels with cargo capacity ranging from 4,000 to 25,000 dwt.
