COSCO Shipping Energy inks deal to build six 307,000 dwt VLCCs

China COSCO Shipping Corporation Ltd has confirmed that COSCO Shipping Energy signed a contract for the construction of six VLCCs.

COSCO Shipping Energy made a significant stride forward by signing a contract on November 22 with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. and China Shipbuilding Trading for the construction of six 307,000 dwt crude oil tankers.

The vessels will be both LNG ready and methanol ready, which the company says it is a testament to their preparedness for conversion to LNG and methanol powered ships during the newbuilding phase.

COSCO Shipping has been actively advancing the development of green, low-carbon, and intelligent fleets, within its oil and gas as well as general cargo specialized fleets, China COSCO Shipping Corporation Ltd claims in its statement.

It also mentions that this move is in response to the accelerated pace of carbon emission reductions in the international shipping industry.

“The design of these vessels has been meticulously optimized across various hull profiles, ensuring an optimal match between the power output and speed of the main engines. This optimization aims at achieving maximum energy savings while maintaining excellent economic efficiency,” the statement reads.
