The Danish ship design company Knud E. Hansen states that the first of their designed 6,500 ceu (car equivalent units) dual-fuel pure car carrier for Wallenius Marine AB, has now been launched at the Chinese shipbuilder Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore.
This innovative vessel is designed to transport cars ballast-free, whilst one of the key features of this design is the incorporation of adaptable multi-fuel engines, allowing the vessel to utilize a variety of fuels, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied biogas (LBG) and marine diesel oil (MDO).
The multiple fuel options, allows the ship to optimize its fuel consumption and emissions based on fuel availability.
Furthermore, the ship designer Knud E. Hansen says that the vessels are designed with an aerodynamic shape to significantly reduce wind drag during operation, which not only improve fuel efficiency but also minimize the carbon footprint of the ship.
The shipbuilding order was signed in 2021 and after their delivery in 2024 both vessels will be chartered out to Volkswagen Konzernlogistik GmbH & Co. OHG, and transport new vehicles of the Volkswagen Group for at least ten years period.
