Finland’s privately owned shipping firm Godby Shipping Ab (Godby), based in Mariehamn-Åland Islands, placed an order on February 11 for a pair of Stream roro vessels, with options for two more, at CIMC Raffles in China.
The vessels will have a length of 125 m, a beam of 24 m and a trailer capacity of 1.700 lm. The cargo capacity in metric tons is about 6.200.
Each vessel is equipped with one stern ramp and fixed ramps connecting the three cargo decks. Typical cargo for the ships will include trailers, cassettes, cars, other roro car-goes and forest products, though the company noted they can also load containers, reefer units, and various kinds of dangerous goods.
The vessel design concept was developed alongside Technolog Services in Hamburg, Germany.
Godby Shipping said the cargo capacity will be 70-100% larger than its present vessels Mimer and Midas while maintaining the same fuel consumption.
The ships will be equipped with shore power connection and batteries. The battery capacity can later be increased, according to Godby Shipping, and complemented by new emission free power generation.
The new vessels are also prepared for a waste heat recovery system and alternative new fuels such as methanol.
According to the project timeline, construction is scheduled to begin in June and November 2027. Launching will take place in May and October 2028, with delivery scheduled in September 2028 and January 2029.
The new vessels will provide employment for around 50 persons onboard. The company stated it hopes to be able to put the vessels under the Finnish flag. Similar to other roros in the fleet, the new vessels will have Finnish/Swedish ice-class 1A.
