The Netherlands based shipowner JR Shipping Group has announced the order of two diesel electric driven, high cubic 8.500 tonner ECO short sea dry cargo vessels with their long year shipyard partner Chowgule Shipbuilding in India.

The two ordered vessels are part of a series of eight vessels that have been initiated together with Netherlands based short sea specialist ‘Boomsma Shipping’ and in close cooperation with German shipowner ‘Leonhardt & Blumberg’.

JR Shipping Group will take delivery of numbers 6 and 8 in the series of diesel-electric, high-cubic-capacity ECO-8500 vessels designed by Conoship International in the Netherlands.

The delivery of number 6 is scheduled for the end of June 2027 and number 8 will follow at the end of February 2028.

Announcing the order, the company said that the new vessels will require 50% – 60% less propulsion energy compared to existing tonnage.

This shipbuilding order marks the return to the dry cargo sector for JR Shipping Group, as the group’s activity in the short sea dry cargo vessel market was paused in 2019 following the sale of the last 5,000-tonners in the fleet, as the company mentions in its release.
