Spanish bunker service company Mureloil and compatriot Murueta Shipyards have inked a deal to build a new hybrid chemical tanker.
The agreement was signed in Bilbao between managing director of Mureloil, Jose Luis Caraballo, and Cesar Aizpuru Arregui, technical director of Astilleros de Murueta, a privately owned industrial group with more than 70 years of activity dedicated to the design and construction of all types of vessels.
Mureloil will team up with the Spanish Group to construct a new hybrid chemical tanker that will be deployed in Portuguese waters for bunkering operations.
The delivery of the ship is planned at the end of 2027, marking a new milestone in the collaboration between the two parties.
The newbuild will be classed by class society Bureau Veritas and flagged in Spain.
The vessel sets a new benchmark for operational efficiency in the tanker segment as it features a hybrid propulsion system with batteries allowing for operations in electric mode for several hours.
In accordance with Mureloil, the vessel is designed to be onshore power supply ready, that enables completely clean port operations and reduces her emissions and environmental impact significantly.
“This newbuilding reinforces both companies’ commitment of designing advanced technological solutions for the maritime supply and transportation of liquid fuels and specifically biofuels and methanol,” Mureloil said in a statement on Friday, Dec. 19.
