K. Sætre Rederi

Norway’s family-owned company K. Sætre Rederi has ordered a fully electric cargo vessel at Royal Bodewes.

The shipowner and operator of four vessels K. Sætre Rederi, with a focus on the transport of bulk commodities and general cargo on the North Sea, sealed a deal with the shipyard in the Netherlands, with vessel delivery expected in March 2028, according to a statement from Royal Bodewes.

The vessel will operate along Norway’s coastal route, transporting products for the steel producer 7 Steel Nordic from Mo i Rana.

The new ordered cargo vessel, with a length of 70 meters and deadweight of around 3,600 tons, will feature a 13.3 MWh battery system, providing an endurance range of more than 270 nautical miles.

Electrical integration will be delivered by SEAM, headquartered in Haugesund, Norway.

The vessel will sail under the Norwegian flag and comply with Norwegian crew terms and conditions.

“This represents a major technological breakthrough for coastal shipping. With this electric range, we can operate large parts of the Norwegian coastline fully electric without emissions, largely relying on existing charging infrastructure,” said Åge Sætre of K. Sætre Rederi.
